This is a Victorian style smooth arched cast-iron insert with an original painted wooden surround. The black insert has a a very simple yet elegant smooth arch. The surround has a white painted finish, a wide projecting mantel shelf and a plain frieze beneath layered upper mouldings.

Narrow rope-pattern trim outlines the surround’s inner frame, which steps out at the upper corners before continuing down the uprights to square foot blocks. A repeating decorative band beneath the shelf adds detail across the top. The surround’s straight lines contrast with the smooth curves of the insert, while the white paint sets off the black ironwork. It would suit either a bedroom or lounge where an arched fireplace with a decorative wooden surround is required.
