Some people own a Victorian or Edwardian house and simply like the idea of fitting an original fireplace from the same period as the property.
Others have heard the word “reproduction” and assume it must be inferior.
Equally, some people assume a later casting must be better simply because it’s newer.

Original fireplaces may show signs of age, older casting methods or manufacturer’s marks. Later castings may be cleaner or more consistent, although a well-made reproduction can look extremely convincing.

If you’re restoring a period property, you may like the idea of fitting an original fireplace from the same era, and that’s a perfectly good reason to choose one.

A fireplace can be completely original and still be the wrong choice for a particular room. Equally, a later casting can look absolutely right once it has been restored and installed.
